gaygreekgladiator:

it is your heart, pt 2/5

"Dominus spoke to me of your ordeal," the slave said in a gentle voice. "I hope you will find comfort here."

"I grieve to see my city like this…" She said in a faraway voice. "With so many dead and buildings in ruin…" She looked up and smiled feebly. "But it is a joy to be clean and free. Please, send my gratitude to your dominus."

"I will, my lady," the slave said, ducking her head. She looked up and smiled, and Laeta felt the woman’s kindness wash over her, as warm and soothing as the bathwater. "If you wish, I have perfume and clothes and jewelry—if a bath can soothe wounds, perhaps proper adornment might inspire happiness."

"Thank you, yes—what is your name?"

"Kore."

gaygreekgladiator:

 it is your heart, pt1/5

Kore stared out of the window, unseeing, unfeeling. She had felt precious little, since that night. Why should she trust in her own emotions? Her own eyes, her own hands. She hardly believed that the stone beneath her feet was real, because once she had thought herself loved, and she had been proven wrong. (Did Marcus love her? she wondered. Did she dare believe it?)

As she looked out over the city, the gate opened and the soldiers escorted a woman through them. A Roman woman, still wearing the clothes of her rank, though the arrogance, the cruelty usually adorned with it had been stripped from her—if ever it existed. (Of course it did, she admonished herself. She could not trust in kindness, after all.) She looked at the bodies around her and wept; she was beautiful in her grief, like a river that wailed and moaned as it rushed over rocks. Kore closed her eyes and breathed deeply, and reminded herself that she could not weep. She wondered who the Roman was and why she cried so. She doubted she would ever find out.
